WhatsApp platform

Conversation window

The conversation window is the period, 24 hours on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger, during which a business may send free-form messages after a customer's most recent message.

Once it closes, WhatsApp allows only pre-approved message templates, and Instagram and Messenger allow almost nothing without a special permission from Meta. Every platform in this category is bound by it equally, because the rule is Meta's. A product that appears to sidestep it is either using a mechanism with conditions attached or is risking your account.

Session message: A session message is a free-form reply sent inside the conversation window, written in whatever words you like without needing Meta to approve it first.
Human agent tag: The human agent tag is a Meta feature that extends the reply window on Instagram and Messenger for conversations a person is actively handling, beyond the standard 24 hours.
